The fashion industry has always benefited from the inspiration provided by India's diverse culture and longstanding traditions. Indian textiles and clothing styles are regarded by designers as archetypes of ancient practices related to the donning of garments. Moreover, the advent of technology and the proliferation of fashion-related apps have further transformed the industry. These apps provide a platform for fashion enthusiasts to explore and discover the fusion of traditional Indian elements with modern designs. Since the past few decades, international designers have created beautiful interpretations from India's rich culture, bright colors, and exotic hand crafted techniques of embroideries and weaves.
Indian Motifs and Designs Inspiring International Fashion
Indian motifs and designs have been used by international fashion designers such as John Galliano for Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, and Jean Paul Gautier to create new fashion collections. These brands find a market in the culture and art of India, which also serves as a source of inspiration for them. The saree is an example of an Indian aesthetic that has served as an inspiration to a number of different designers.
Digitizing the World's Fashion Treasures and Celebrating India's Sari Drapes
As part of its Art & Culture section, Google has just recently launched the #wewearculture platform with the intention of collaborating with museums and fashion houses to digitize the world's cultural treasures and to create a searchable guide to a collective archive of approximately 30,000 fashion pieces. This endeavor is part of Google's larger effort to expand its Art & Culture section. Border & Fall, a creative agency based in Bengaluru, is responsible for incorporating the sari into this narrative. As part of the project, Border & Fall has created an online exhibition that showcases some of the lesser known sari drape styles from India.
Indian Model Deepti Sharma's Sari Drape Takes Center Stage
Deepti Sharma, an Indian model, was dressed in a sari by Dolce & Gabbana for the presentation of their Alta Moda collection at Lake Como in Italy. The ensemble included a headpiece, earrings, and a pair of sari drapes. The history behind how each member of this group first met and collaborated is a fascinating one. The designers gave the model the fabric and asked her how she would drape it if it were a sari. It appears that the designers took their cues from the model herself. As a result of the experiment, the following appear to have been merged together.
Alexander McQueen's Fall 2008 Collection: Indian Sari Inspiration Shines
Alexander McQueen returned from a trip to India and immediately began work on his fall 2008 collection, which featured prominent elements such as brocades, military tailcoats, and diamond neckpieces. A traditional Indian sari was clearly an influence on at least one of the looks that was presented. The model paraded down the runway wearing a white gown with a red brocade fabric draped around her. She also wore jewelry that was reminiscent of the jewelry worn by Indian royals.
The Saree and the Spirituality of India
A group of researchers at the Spiritual Science Research Foundation Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalaya, led by Dr. Nandini Samant, a medical doctor turned scientist and educationist, discovered that the nine yard saree wrapped around by women helps them to garner positive spiritual energy or Sattva guna. This discovery was made by the team of researchers at the Spiritual Science Research Foundation Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalaya.
The Spiritual Significance of Saree Draping in Hindu Culture
Every aspect of Hindu thought can be traced back to the study of spirituality as its foundation. In our society, it is customary to drape oneself in a saree that is nine yards long. Only nine-yard sarees were worn by women in earlier times; however, modern women find that wearing such a garment to be awkward and inconvenient. As a result, they have begun to dress in sarees that are six yards long. The pallu of a saree that is six yards long is typically draped over the wearer's left or right shoulder, but this placement is determined by the state to which she belongs.
